Laughing gas is becoming a popular option for women in labor, but is it really the safest option?

Epidurals have long been used to ease the pain from labor contractions, but expectant mothers are now using laughing gas as an alternative way to decrease pain during birth.

According to a report by ABC News, there has been a surge in demand of mothers asking to be treated with laughing gas during labor, namely because it’s much less invasive than an epidural. Traditionally used in dentists’ offices, laughing gas is made of nitrous oxide, which has a remarkable safety record.

“It’s a relatively mild pain reliever that causes immediate feelings of relaxation and helps relieve anxiety,” Camman explained, adding that, “it makes you better able to cope with whatever pain you are having.”

While more research still needs to be conducted to ensure that laughing gas has no negative impact on the fetus, the decision to opt for the less-invasive and less-expensive birth alternative has already become standard in Europe. According to midwife Kerry Dixon, in New Zealand nearly 70 percent of women are already choosing to use laughing gas during labor.
